Romanze

A traditional tune from 19th century Spain of unknown origin. Several name guitarists such as the Spanish virtuoso Narciso Yepes have claimed authorship. The piece featured in the flims Jeux Interdits (1952) and Blood and Sand (1941).

Ave Maria

This famous tune was originally written by Franz Schubert under the title 'Ellen's Dritter Gesang' (Ellen's Third Song) in 1825 as part of a setting of 7 songs from Walter Scott's 1810 narrative poem The Lady of the Lake.

Cavatina (Deer Hunter)

Originally written for piano by Stanley Myers for the 1970 film The Walking Stick, the version arranged for guitar and recorded by John Williams was made popular as the theme for the movie The Deer Hunter in 1978.

Recuerdos De La Alhambra

Written by the master guitarist Francisco Tárrega in 1899 after visiting the Alhambre palace and fortress complex in Granada, a breath taking example of medieval Islamic architecture which in turn inspired this beautiful piece of music.

Estudio in Em

A romantic piece in E minor by Francisco Tarrega. Tarrega (1852 -1909) is arguably the most important of the guitarist composers, combining musical sensitivity, virtuosity, and creative genius. Tarrega was active in the time when Antonia de Torres produced and formalised the design of the modern classical concert guitar, whose instruments Tarraga played.

Study in Bm Op 35

Fernando Sor (1778 - 1839) towers in the classical guitar tradition with an eminence matched perhaps only by Tarrega. Sor who predated Tarrega by 13 years was considered by contempories  to be 'the best guitarist in the world'. His concert pieces require virtuosic performances to this day, while his 24 studies are a legacy of brilliant musical inventiveness and compositional charm.

Study No. 3 Op 60

An essential study of the classical repertoire this piece was composed by Matteo Carcassi (1792-1853). A contemporary  of Sor, and also considered a virtuoso guitarist, Carcassi was in many ways Sor's Italian counterpart, and equally well known for his own publication of 'studies' which are still loved and played today.

Lagrima

This piece composed by Tarrega in the early 1890s remains one of his most popular. Modulating between E major and E minor it is a charming etude which shifts between light and dark, sorry and joy, encapsulating musical perfection.

Popeye

Written by Samuel Lerner (1903-1989) of Fleischer Studios in 1933 for the animated debut of the character created in 1929 by American cartoonist Elzie Segar (1894-1938).
